Stoker utilizes numerous convictions from the Christian religion to show various measures of Anti-Christian qualities, offbeat convictions of the insurance towards malicious, and to thoroughly analyze the forces of God with those of Dracula. It is a subject that is utilized all through the whole book. There are numerous ways that Bram Stoker's character Dracula can be viewed as the Anti-Christ, for the most part in light of the appearing of Anti-Christian qualities and maltreatment of the Christian religion. In section one as Jonathan Harker is venturing out to Castle Dracula he is met by a few people who give him a cross when he reveals to them where he is going. One notion is that a rosary will shield you from all underhanded, and in this novel the malevolence is Dracula. This rosary ensures him when Jonathan cuts himself shaving the following day and Dracula thrusts for his throat, yet stops when he sees the cross around Jonathan's neck. Later in the book it talks about how you can shield yourself from Dracula and different vampires by the ownership of a cross or for all intents and purposes any sanctified thing from the Christian religion can be utilized to spare you from the assault or nearness of a vampire. Another case of one of the odd demonstrations is later in the book w hen Van Helsing utilizes a Host to keep Dracula from entering his final resting place or when he makes a ?Holy Circle? with the Hosts to keep vampires out and to guard Mina. These are models in which a few types of Christian convictions are utilized to forestall the assault of Dracula. Dracula has a few powers that the Christian's accept nobody however God could control. Christians accept that devouring God's body and blood will give them everlasting existence with God in paradise, Dracula is remaining undead, or nosferatu, by expending the blood of the living to endure and to fabricate his quality. By this, Dracula is depending on people to reestablish his eternal life and not focusing on God as the wellspring of life. It is said that you should give God access to your heart, Dracula may not enter somebody's home except if they let him in. God is alluded to in the Bible similar to the light, which represents bliss or life. Dracula's forces are restricted during the light and his forces are more grounded in the night, during haziness, which represents underhanded. Dracula moves to an old deserted Church not utilized any longer which can s how that God is not, at this point present which would achieve Dracula's motivation of spreading fiendish. Dracula is likewise depicted as the Anti-Christ by having similitudes with Jesus yet in fiendish manners. As Dracula benefits from the blood of the living he makes devotees as Jesus had pupils. All through the book a few times, ordinarily while Reinfield (one of his adherents or ?supporters?) is talking, when Dracula is alluded to the pronoun is promoted, as Christians would do when alluding to God. Reinfield sees Dracula as god-like and all-amazing, he additionally alludes to him as his lord. All through the novel, Bram Stoker utilizes numerous scriptural inferences to show the god-like way of Dracula, for example, ?the blood is the life? said by Reinfield and when Renfield cites Enoch. Renfield needs to stroll close by as Enoch strolled close by. At the point when the include is crushed at long last, he becomes dust. This is significant on the grounds that transforming into dust speaks to Christian opportunity in death and liberates him from his malicious ways. Bram Stoker's Dracula stresses job of Christianity against Dracula's Anti-Christian nearness. Dracula himself is a satanic figure, both in appearance and in conduct, and could be viewed as the Anti-Christ. From multiple points of view Dracula is spoken to as the encapsulation of malice. At long last, he is crushed by heavenliness. Dracula utilizes numerous scriptural references and shows a genuine likeness between

In fear of seeming rude, she always allows it without complaint even though it makes her uncomfortable. Instead of being honest, she sits, allows herself to be poked and prodded, and holds her own thoughts hostage within her mind. She wonders if the girl has really never seen hair like hers before. She wonders why the girl has such a zealous desire to touch her hair; what makes it so enchanting? Unfortunately, I was not being completely honest when I said that KT receives questions like this on a regular basis. How Are Coral Reefs Formed

Reefs are centers of biodiversity, where youll find many types of fish,  invertebrates and other marine life. But did you know that coral reefs are also alive? What Are Coral Reefs? Before learning how reefs form, its helpful to define a reef.  Acoral reef is made up of animals called stony corals. The stony corals are made up of tiny, soft colonial organisms called polyps. Polyps look a lot like a sea anemone, as they are related to these animals. They are invertebrates in the Cnidaria  phylum. In stony corals, the polyp sits within a calyx, or cup that it excretes. This calyx is made of limestone, also known as calcium carbonate. The polyps are interconnected to form a mass of living tissue over the limestone skeleton.  This limestone is why these corals are called stony corals.   How Do Reefs Form? As the polyps live, reproduce, and die, they leave their skeletons behind.  A coral reef is built up by layers of these skeletons covered by living polyps. The polyps reproduce either through fragmentation (when a piece breaks off and new polyps form) or sexual reproduction through spawning. A  reef ecosystem  may be made up of many species of corals.  Healthy reefs are typically colorful, highly biodiverse areas made up of a mishmash of corals and the species that inhabit them, such as fish,  sea turtles, and invertebrates such as  sponges, shrimp, lobsters,  crabs, and  seahorses.  Soft corals, like  sea fans, may be found within a coral reef ecosystem, but do  not build reefs themselves.   The corals on a reef are further cemented together by organisms like coralline algae, and physical processes like waves washing sand into spaces in the reef.   Zooxanthellae In addition to the animals living on and in reefs, the corals themselves host zooxanthellae. Zooxanthellae are single-celled dinoflagellates that conduct  photosynthesis. The zooxanthellae use the waste products of the coral during photosynthesis, and the coral can use the nutrients provided by the zooxanthellae during photosynthesis. Most reef-building corals are located in shallow water where they have plenty of access to the sunlight needed for photosynthesis. The presence of the zooxanthellae helps the reef to thrive and become larger. Some coral reefs are very large. The  Great Barrier Reef, which stretches more than 1,400 miles off the coast of Australia, is the worlds largest reef. 3 Types of Coral Reefs Fringing reefs: These reefs  grow close to the coast in shallow waters.Barrier reefs: Barrier reefs, like the Great Barrier Reef, are large, continuous reefs. They are separated from land by a lagoon.Atolls:  Atolls are ring-shaped and located near the sea surface. They get their shape from growing on top of underwater islands or inactive volcanoes. Threats to Reefs An important part of coral reefs is their calcium carbonate skeleton.  If you follow ocean issues, you know that animals with calcium carbonate skeletons are under stress from ocean acidification  Ocean acidification causes a lowering of the oceans pH, and this makes it difficult for corals and other animals that have calcium carbonate skeletons. Other threats to reefs include pollution from coastal areas, which can affect reef health, coral bleaching due to warming waters, and damage to corals due to construction and tourism. However, B corporations are organization, which are approving the corporate social responsibility and are certified by the as an organization who has gone green and is making considerable amount of contribution to the corresponding environment and the society. The benefit corporations have been considered as a different form of organisation by various researcher and falls under category of gray sector organisation. These organizations are trying to enhance the corporate social responsibility aspect in the modern organization (Stecker, 2016). This organisation are incorporating triple bottom line in to their business model and providing equal importance to corporate social responsibility as the first bottom line (Corkery, Mikalsen, Allan, 2017). The primary interests of the organisation are to ensure profitability and fulfilling the objectives of the stakeholders (Yosifon, 2016). The inclusion of the corporate social responsibility in to the bottom line means that the organisation will use tools for measuring their impact on the society and the corresponding environment. The benefit Corporation and B corps have lot of similarities and they are similar to each other. However, there are some basic differences between Benefit corporations and certified B Corporations. The benefit corporations in the states of U.S. but the B Corps are available for all business organizations irrespective of the corporate structure of the organization. Moreover, promoting the corporate social responsibility of the organisation will improve the brand image and help in maximization of the revenue. Research question How do B Corporation Australia and New Zealand communicate their social and environmental responsibility trough social media? And what is the significance of social media in sustainability of the B Corporation? Rationale of research question Social media is important for the sustainability of the organizations in the market and the companies will have to make use of it they want to gain competitive advantage in the market (Kumar Greene, 2017). The research questions are developed in accordance to the objective of the study and will facilitate in evaluation all the aspect of the research topic. The research questions will provide the different dimension to the study and will provide a wider view of the practices of the B Corporations in Australia and New Zealand. The first research question will identify the various platforms that are being used and the second question will identify the impact of the social media on these Gray Sector organizations. Literature review The Benefits Corporation belongs to a fourth sector, which is called the Gray Sector (Andr, 2012). These organizations have the characteristics of both the private and the public sector companies and have complex structures. These organizations have crossed the traditions borders to incorporate multiple bottom lines in to the organization (Steingard Clark, 2016). This has blurred the lines between the private and the public sectors, as these possess characteristics of both types of organization. These organizations follow all the rules and regulations of the government and board of directors of the organizations are hired by the government (Andr, 2015). These organizations have close relations with the government but consist of elements of the private organizations. Social media has emerged as one of the platforms for promoting the organizational practices and interacting with the consumers in the market. The use of the social media is necessary for the gaining competitive advantage in the market (Hiller, 2013). The organizations are promoting their products and the unique selling propositions to attract the consumers. Therefore, highlighting of the corporate social responsibility activities will provide the organization with a better image in the market. Thus, it is important for the organizations to communicate their corporate social responsibility activities (Stubbs, 2017). The negative aspects of an organization spreads faster than the positive ones so it is essential for the organization to give a push to their initiatives so that they can make use of this factors for gaining competitive advantage in the market (Loewenstein, 2016) The social media is a powerful medium and the organizations try to be bold about their activities and the good they are trying to bring in to the society and corresponding environment (Whelan, Moon Grant, 2013). The managers of the organizations are being open about the policies and the activities in the organization. However, the traditional form of media is quite expensive so the companies use the online media platform for communicating their social and environmental responsibilities to the society (Whelan, Moon Grant, 2013). The advent of web 2.0 has changed the overall scenario and people are easily connected to the different parts of the world. This provides the organizations with the opportunity of reaching wider range of consumers. The most popular social media platforms include Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The number of enrolments in Facebook is increasing rapidly and has the ability of reaching variety of people (Vogel, Rose, Okdie, Eckles Franz, 2015). This helps to maintain transparency, which enables open criticism for the society to ensure that the organization can make better efforts. Moreover, it provides the opportunity of providing opinions and justification for their respective action so that the society can understand the perspective of the organization (Razmerita, Kirchner Nabeth, 2014). Environmental and social sustainability issues are the major concerns for the organizations in the market. Thus, it has become necessary for the organizations to portray them as ethical organizations by providing evidence of their social and environmental concerns. These suggest that the organizations are making an effort in including triple bottom line in to the business model of the organization (Olorunnisola Martin, 2013). These has lead to the development t of organization which are of hybrid in nature which are suppose to focus on the benefit of the public by maintaining the goals and objectives of the stakeholders in the market. Thus, it can be seen that there is change in the paradigm of most of the organization, which are adopting social and environmental factors into the main bottom line of the organization (Lyon Montgomery, 2013). Thus, the B lab, being nonprofit organization is provi8din g support to the Benefit Corporations and certifying the B corps for maintaining hig h standards in the field of environmental and social sustainability. B corporations are the organizations who have orientation towards making success and their strategies are developed in order to meet that need. The adaption of changing the organizational structure in being a B Corp is beneficial for all the companies in the market as they are able to develop a network very easily and helps in the improvement of the image of the organization (Nicholas Sacco, 2016). This is because of the fact that there is consumers prefer organization who tries to give back something to the society and the corresponding environment. Social media is a platform, which provides transparency, and majority of the consumers try to reach the companies regarding environmental and social issues (Cao, Gehman, Grimes, 2017). The social media is used to reach moer number of consumers from different parts of the world as the same time. Thus, social media is used for providing better reach to the companies in the market where they aim to highlight all the bottom lines of the or ganization (Winkler Portocarrero, 2017). However, it is essential to bridge, communicate and connect your impact with the consumers in the market and social media is an effective medium that can be used for fulfilling this purpose. Initially the organizations will have to us eo the social media to bridge the gap between the consumers and the organization. The organization will have to communicate the impact of the organization on the society and the environment so that the awareness of the consumers can be elevated (Tkachenko, Wingate Cahill, 2016). Moreover, this will enable the organization to connect to more and more consumers in the market, which will be able to generate more impact on the corresponding society. The organizations are positioned in such a way so that there are able to excel in interaction with the society in an effective manner (Verbos Black, 2017). Moreover, it helps in effective cross-cultural promotion and the products used by the consumers are given feedbacks, which helped them to provide free publicity and advertisements for the organizations. The certification of being a B Corp gives credibility to the organization, which helps them to grab the attention of more number of consumers in the market (Bauer Umlas, 2017). Similarly, social media provides visibility to the organizations, which facilitates in improving the brand image of the organization. Social media is used for deepening of the impact of the social and environmental activities of the organization (Brewster Cerdin, 2018). The dragon fly effect is a phenomenon which helps to improve the impact of the social media by spreading the message in the effective way. The social media is used for developing the brand and spreading its name to all parts of the world. Thus, the organization can attract talented recruits who can improve the quality of the workforce (Elving et al., 2015). Thus, social media provides the organizations with competitive advantage in the market and the overall impact on the community is huge. Research methodology Research methodology is one of the most important parts of the study, as it will help to identify the factors that will be used for the development of the research method (Green Thorogood, 2014). The various approaches and research methods will be discussed thoroughly to understand the plan of action. The methodology will consist of fixed set of paradigms, which will be used to conduct the study. The methodology of the research will be validated to analyze the precision and the accuracy of the study (Green Thorogood, 2014; Taylor, Bogdan DeVault, 2015). This is an exploratory study and is conducted to ensure a better understanding of the topic. The study will highlight the issues which have not been analyzed till now. Methodology The research methodology will be use on this research is Collect the data from 20 the companies who are already member od B Corps trough Facebook or Twitter stats social media positing by looking each companys posting that whether on the 5 Categories of B corps which are Environment, Workers, Customers, Community and Governance. The period of the data will be based on from 1/1/2017 to 31/10/2017. Each posting will be classifying into 5 element categories. Each posting will be looking on whether is on. The original post will be copy and paste on the paper to be shown where information came from and be used as reference. Moreover, the though each company will be counting how many each posting were talking on 5 categories then at end the total of posting counts for each company will be given. The secondary analysis, which consist of creation of different themes, which will be used to analyze the different case studies. The findings from each of the case study will be analyzed to link with the objectives of the study so that the existing theories can be validated (Clarke Braun, 2013). The secondary data will also consist of the research papers, journals and peer reviewed journals, which would be analyzed to identify the significance of social media in communicating their corporate social responsibilities (Vaismoradi et al., 2016). The secondary analysis will consist of only one method that is known as mono method. Qualitative analysis of the data will be used to identify the patterns within the data that will provide a different dimension to the study (Han, 2015). However, there are certain limitations to this study, as primary analysis of data is not conducted. The study consists of secondary analysis of data so no sampling methods will be used for the collection of the data. The reliability and validity of the study is important factor as helps to prove that the study is authentic and relevant. The same instruments can be used in multiple studies of similar types is known as the reliability of the data. When the degree of reliability is high in the data then it will provide positive results for the study (Bryman Bell, 2015). When all the research methods in the study are followed according to the planned way then it is called the validity. In this study, the validity and reliability of the study will be maintained so that the accurate findings can be generated. However, in the case of academic and the business journals ethical ground will have to be maintained. The data that will be kept confidential and will not be used in other study of similar types Research plan Main activities/ stages Week1 Week2 Week3 Week4 Week 5 Week 6 Topic Selection Data collection from secondary sources Framing layout of the research Literature review Formation of the research Plan Selection of the Appropriate Research Techniques Primary data collection Analysis Interpretation of Data Collection Conclusion of the Study Formation of Rough Draft Submission of Final Work Conclusion Therefore, throughout this study, a research will make sure that the relevant methods will be followed for the analysis of the study. The structure that has been established will have to be maintained to identify the significance of social on corporations. References: Andr, R. (2012). The Impact of Culture on Ecological Footprint An Experiment Sample

The Impact of Culture on Ecological Footprint: An Experiment Paper Recycled * Not recycled Background: My task was to collect the ecological footprint of a group of students between 1 7 ND 18 years old then calculate it with an online ecological footprint calculator after the students answer a selection of questions on the questionnaire I gave out which helps identify the ecological footprint of each individual. Moreover, I had to analyses the reason behind the results and link them to the maybe their culture or lifestyle they are used to. Research Question: Analyses the reasons behind the ecological footprints of students in your school. Hypothesis: My prediction would be that since we have diverse and multifarious cultures and people in our school, there might be a lot of different habits they follow but they also live in Qatar and will somehow get affected by the culture and the habits of people around them, therefore, predict that will have some different results but most of them will he close and they are the ones with very large ecological footprints. This is because there is a huge lack of environmental awareness in the Middle East in general and it is probably the spot in the world that is hugely at risk tot all the harm that is caused to the environment. We will write a custom essay sample on The Impact of Culture on Ecological Footprint: An Experiment specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on The Impact of Culture on Ecological Footprint: An Experiment specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on The Impact of Culture on Ecological Footprint: An Experiment specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer As a result, teenagers pacifically tend to be ignorant about the environment and somehow selfish leading them to do a lot of activities that harm the environment badly. In summary, I think the large ecological footprints will be occurring more as look through the results than the small ecological footprints/ Method: The method I will be following is handing out a questionnaire that identifies the students general usage of resources and how often he/she uses them and additionally their general eating habits. The answers to their questions Will be inserted into an online ecological footprint calculator available on van,w.. Electrification. Com and that will identify the size of their ecological footprint. After collecting this data Will be analyzing the results and identifying the reasons behind them which can be culture, lifestyle. Etc and I will also be seeing if I have more large ecological footprints that small DC Palestinian female 10, B Jamaican male 10. B Iranian male British ma le 10. G Country ICC Footprint(tones of ICC) I CEO footprint global hectares) I If everyone lived like them there should be Planets. Iran 19. 91 5. 61 3. 41 Britain 12. 1 | SSI 3,41 Palestine 1 9. 81 5. 1 3. 41 Jamaican | 141 1 6,013. 71 elected data by distributing a questionnaire that will insert the answers to into an online ecological footprint calculator to identify their ecological footprints. Pour students from different countries and cultures around the world and also citizens of Doth, Qatar answered the questionnaire. Analysis As you can see, the results of the data collection did vary in a lot byways and there has to be a lot Of reasons behind these results Looking at number one which asks what transport facility do they use to travel from one place to another. From all four students the answer was by car and the results varied teen average and heavy users of cars. As we all know, cars release carbon dioxide, which is the gas that creates a greenhouse effect trapping the heat in the atmosphere and warming the earth. Engines also release unburned hydrocarbons and Nitrogen Oxides, all of these are pollutants. Therefore, this is very harmful to the environment. This might be because Qatar is a Middle- Eastern country and has very high temperatures during the year than low temperatures, As a result, this does not help anyone consider using other transport facilities like train, walking, and cycling. Now looking at number 2, the Palestinian and Iranian tend to have spend their vacations a short-flight away from home because their countries are in the Middle east or close and dont have to travel long distances to get to the spot they want. In contrast, the Jamaican and British spend their vacations in places that are a long flight away from Qatar in specific because their countries are far away and are at least 7 hours away by plane. The Palestinian and Jamaican tend to not conserve energy unlike the Iranian and British who. This can be because of the cultural differences and the way they ere both brought up or the way they are used to treating the environment and the resources they use. Looking at how much of meat eaters they all are, found that the Iranian and Palestinian students are the ones that are heavy meat eaters this is because both their traditional food always or mostly have meats as their key ingredient and they are all used to meat in food as a culture. Whereas, the Jamaican and the British students are occasional, regular eaters of meat because theyre traditional food might not contain as much meat as other traditions. Lastly they are all average producers tot not recycled domestic waste. The reason behind this might he the poor recycling and environmentally friendly senses available in Qatar. DECK Overall, the results are very close but slightly different depending on each individuals habits and actions that they take towards the environment. Looking at these results, I do in fact get very worried as because although they do have some differences the results remain dangerous as it was calculated that if every person lives like them or treats the environments in a slight similar way to them we Vile need around 3. 4 to Planets to support global consumption. The procedure followed I consider very successful and gave clear results but the only mistake might have done is not taking a enough data as think I should have given out then questionnaire to more than four people that can see act different or know they act different towards the environment to give us a different result from all the Others that might be slightly close or similar. In conclusion, I can see that the results of my experiment were in a lot of ways close to what have stated in my hypothesis since the results proved that differences in culture and location can definitely result to different answers in everything.

Public Vs. Private Colleges Where Should You Go

Public Vs. Private Colleges Where Should You Go SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips While you may end up deciding to apply to a mixture of public and private colleges, you should be aware that each type has its own general set of characteristics that may be more or less aligned with your preferences.Which type of school is cheaper? Which colleges are bigger, and what opportunities exist in private vs public universities? In this article, I’ll discuss the differences between public and private colleges that you should consider in your search. What Are Public and Private Colleges? Before we get to the main differences, let’s take a second to define public and private colleges.Public colleges are higher educational institutions that areset up and funded by state governments.Well-known public colleges include the University of California, Ohio State University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Texas. Private colleges are higher educational institutions that areset up and funded by individuals outside of the government.Private colleges may be either â€Å"non-profit† or â€Å"for-profit†. Non-profit private colleges are solely focused on providing a quality education for students and helping them to achieve academic and career goals. They answer to a financially disinterested board of trustees, not an owner and shareholders. For-profit private colleges exist as businesses at the mercy of shareholders. Their goal is to turn a profit first and foremost.Though they strive to provide a quality education, if a program isn’t making them money, they will cut it even if that's not in the best interests of their students. Most reputable colleges are non-profit. This includes big names like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford. For-profit schools like University of Phoenix, Devry, and ITT Tech generally have poor reputations for helping their students and delivering a quality education. For the purposes of this guide, when we refer to private colleges we'll be talking about non-profit colleges only. What Are the Main Differences Between Public and Private Colleges? Funding and Tuition Costs Public colleges are mostly funded by state governments. The government pays for the operating costs of public colleges and universities and oversees the operation of public colleges through boards and trustees. This influx of government money means that students do not pay the real cost of attendance - they pay the cost after significant subsidies from the government. For this reason, public universities can afford to offer lower tuition prices on average.Average tuition at public colleges for the 2014-15 school year was $9,139 for in-state students and $22,958 for out of state students. Private colleges, on the other hand, are not funded by the government in any way. They rely on alumni contributors and tuition to pay for their programs. This usually forces students to carry the full cost of their education, leading to higher tuition prices.Average tuition at private colleges for the 2014-15 school year was $31,231. Class Size and Demographics Public colleges tend to have larger class sizes, especially at the introductory level. This may result in less direct access to professors and fewer class discussions. Many students come from in-state because of the lower tuition prices and higher admissions rate, so there may be less geographical diversity in the student body. Private colleges have smaller class sizes on average. This means closer relationships between students and professors and more class discussion opportunities. There will also be more geographical diversity in the student body since in-state and out of state students are not given different tuition prices. Class discussion at a small college Degree and Program Offerings Public colleges tend to have a larger student body and offer a wider variety of degrees and programs. The largest universities in the US are public, and some host undergraduate populations of over 40,000 students. At a public college, you'll be able to find pretty much any type of major program you want. However, you'll usually have to be more of a self-starter because there is less direct guidance from advisors. Private colleges don't have the same large range of major choices as public colleges, and they tend to have smaller student bodies overall. There are some private colleges that have less than 500 students total.Private colleges make up for their lack of scope with more specific curriculum requirements or a specialized focus in liberal arts or engineering. They are also more likely to have excellent advisory systems and allow students to design their own courses of study. Research Opportunities Public universities, due to their abundance of government funding, often have cutting edge research facilities and virtually endless resources.Even with all of these possibilities, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd and get the support of professors for your research efforts. But if you’re willing to put yourself out there, public universities have some of the best opportunities in the country for intense academic research, especially in the hard sciences. Private colleges may have less resources and facilities overall, but they make up for it with easy access to professors and individual encouragement of student research efforts. Many private colleges institute specialized research programs and opportunities for students. With small class sizes, you’ll have more of a chance to get close to your professors and potentially work with them on projects. The Science Learning Center at the University of Texas, Dallas. Campus Life Public colleges usually have vibrant communities with a wide variety of extracurricular opportunities and a thriving party scene. There’s something for everyone within the social scene, and you’ll find many people who share your interests no matter how obscure they are.At public colleges, there's always something going on. Private colleges may still have very diverse communities and lots of extracurricular opportunities, but everything typically exists on a smaller scale. Those are just some basic differences between private and public colleges. Remember, they're generalizations. Some private colleges are very large and may have more of a public college atmosphere. It’s up to you to research specific schools and learn more about their characteristics. Which Type of College Is a Better Fit for You? You may be more suited for private or public colleges depending on your academic goals and social preferences. Many students apply to both types of schools, so don’t assume that you have to choose one or the other yet. Here are a couple of questions you can ask yourself to decide whether private or public colleges will be a better fit: Do You Enjoy Meeting Lots of New People? If you’re an outgoing person, you may be happier in the social environment of a large public college. At these types of colleges, you'll constanly meet new people and be presented with opportunities to try different activities. You can expect a wide variety of social experiences with lots of on-campus events and parties. At most private colleges, the student body is smaller, so the social scene may offer fewer options and feel more claustrophobic. However, this can also result in familial feeling amongst students and a more comfortable, friendly atmosphere. If you’re less outgoing and enjoy seeing people you know around all the time, the private college scene may be more your speed.Keep in mind that some private colleges are on the larger side and some public colleges are on the smaller side, so it’s important to consider each school’s characteristics on an individual basis. Are You Interested in a Specific Program? If you have a particular course of study in mind, make sure the colleges where you apply have the appropriate programs and resources. As outlined in the previous section, public colleges may have more advanced research facilities that will be useful if you plan on going into the hard sciences. If you think you're more interested in the humanities, it may not make a difference whether you go to a public or private college. Even if public colleges have more extensive libraries, private colleges usually have the wherewithal to request materials for students from other off-site libraries. Since private colleges offer more flexibility in their programs, you might think about attending a private college if your interests are diverse and might not fit neatly into one premade major track. Are You an Independent Learner? In general, if you're more of a self-starter, you will thrive at a public college. Even though public colleges have many resources, it's hard to know where to begin if you want to take full advantage of these opportunities. If you're naturally a resourceful person who's willing to go after what you want rather than waiting for it to come to you, a public college could be great for you. On the other hand, if you think you'll need more guidance to navigate your college experience, a private college could be a better fit for your personality. In a less overwhelming atmosphere with more direct supervision from professors and academic advisors, you'll have a better chance of realizing your full potential. Do you celebrate every day of your life with an extravagant fireworks display? You might be independent! Get it? Independence Day? Sorry I know I'm reaching here. Public vs. Private Colleges: Doing Your Research Now it’s time to actually research some schools based on your preferences. You canstart with College Navigator, which is a search tool that allows you to look for schools based on location, program type, and, of course, public or private status. If you’re looking for private schools, I would recommend checking the box for non-profit schools. You’ll get results that show all the public or private schools in the area of the country that you’ve specified. You can look at the statistics for these schools and add them to your favorites if any of them strike your fancy. You can also compare them side by side to see what the best options are. After searching on College Navigator, you might consider creating a profile on Cappex, where you can find more colleges and get statistics about campus life alongside student reviews. This is also a great place to create a list of colleges that interest you and compare them.If you complete your profile on Cappex, you’ll also get more recommendations for colleges that match up with your preferences.Remember, many students apply to both public and private colleges, so if your list includes a few of each type that’s totally fine! Conclusion Public and private colleges differ in the ways they are funded: public colleges are funded by state governments, while private colleges are funded by private individuals and organizations.Public and private colleges also have many characteristics that set them apart including tuition, enrollment size, social scene, and program offerings. You may decide to go to either a public or private school based on how well your personality and academic goals align with the general characteristics of each type of college.Make sure that you do your research and get the specific facts on each school before judging just based on whether it's public or private. You may end up applying to both private and public schools because there are so many great options in each category! What's Next? You'll have to make a lot of other decisions in the college admissions process besides whether you want to go to a public or private school. Check out my articles about whether you should go to college close to home and whether you should go to a large or small college. If you think you might be interested in going to a small college, take a look at my list of the best small colleges in the US.If you're interested, you should also check out these articles on the biggest and smallest colleges in the country. Enron accounting scandal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Enron accounting scandal - Essay Example It made revolutionary changes in the trading markets of energy which has opened the door for new power traders and suppliers. It also tailored a nationwide energy-trading network by engaging in electricity and natural gas contracts that reflects the cost of delivery to a specific destination. By year 1999, the company adapted an internet-based system as Enron Online was launched. In 2001, it reported its executed trades on-line averaging to $2.5 billion a day. Having posted a 57 per cent increase in sales between 1996 and 2000, the company was considered as one of the most successful companies in the world. It controlled, 25 per cent of the â€Å"over the counter† energy-trading market or the trades conducted party-to-party and not over an exchange like the New York Mercantile Exchange. In addition, in the last week of 2000, its shares hit a 52-week high of $84.87 per share (www.mbaknol.com, 2011). No doubt that among the major player that had a major impact in the gigantic co llapse that turned out to be Enron is the accounting firm that handled its auditing. This is Arthur Andersen which garnered ire and revulsion following the events of the scandal. There was the unending debacle over the alleged shredding of important documents moments before they were subjected to an investigation. This was to cover-up the paper trail on the corruption that went on within the company. In 2002, the Houston Court found the company guilty of obstructing justice that led to the lost of over $60 billion by investors. The jury found it guilty on account of an alteration of a company memorandum that was connected with the revelation of the income of Enron. The judgment emphasized the need of accounting firms to monitor corporations and not just to stick with balancing accounts (Thomas, 2002). Though the entire firm had been indicted and found guilty, the most prominent figure that contributed to the catastrophe is their Chicago lawyer Nancy Temple who ordered David Duncan t o erase her name from a memo when they already knew the Securities and Exchange Commission was after them. The subject of the memo was on a $1 billion loss of Enron that Temple disagrees with. The whole debacle has placed the entire firm into jeopardy as they lost one-third of their 2,300 clients whereas only 5,000 out of a former 26,000 of their United States employees opted to remain with the company. The editor of Bowman’s Accounting Report has been quoted describing â€Å"Arthur Andersen is dead. Once the indictment was handed down, clients started jumping faster than they did off the Titanic† (Thomas, 2002). All these turn of events had led to the realization that there has been transcendence among accounting firms to be more cautious and transparent of their dealings with client companies. This judgment over Arthur Andersen only leads as basis to the public conclusion that there was something awfully wrong with the way Enron conducted its business. The non-disclo sure of facts that the company is in ruins which led investors to believe they are putting their money on a viable company when in fact they are not. This case served only as fuel to the public clamor to delve into the culpability of Enron executives and to hold them liable and to make them responsible to the aftermath of the company’s mess. There have been a number of opinions that pertain to the whole situation, some even uncalled for and downright degrading such as the reference to Andersen employees as Androids (Thomas, 2002). T

Oppurtunity cost on economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Oppurtunity cost on economics - Essay Example According to Varian (1999, p327): â€Å"In the expression for cost we should be sure to include all the factors of production used by the firm, valued at their market price. Usually this is pretty obvious, but in cases where the firm is owned and operated by the same individual, it is possible to forget about some of the factors.† Varian (1999, p327) went on to give the following example which will enable a better understanding of opportunity costs: â€Å"If an individual works in his own firm, then his labor is an input and it should be counted as part of the costs. His wage rate is simply the market price of his labor – what he would be getting if he sold his labor on the open market. Similarly, if a farmer owns some land and uses it in his production, that land should be valued at its market value for purposes of computing the economic costs. We have seen that economic costs like these are often referred to as opportunity costs. The name comes from the idea that if you are using your labor, for example, in one application, you forgo the opportunity of employing it elsewhere. Therefore, those lost wages are part of the cost of production. Similarly, with the land example: the farmer has the opportunity of renting his land to someone else, but he chooses to forgo that rental income in favor of renting it to himself. The lost rents are part of the opportunity cost of his production. The economic definition of profits re quires that we value all inputs at their opportunity costs.† When firms are making profits in an industry, the industry becomes attractive to prospective investors. The costs of firms should include all costs incurred at their market price. This market price is the opportunity cost. â€Å"After all, the cost curve is supposed to include the cost of all factors necessary to produce output, measured at their market

Offshoring Paper Essay Example for Free

Offshoring Paper Essay This article talks about a trend that started as far back as the 1980’s when companies began sending many jobs abroad mainly because of cheap labor. However, that trend is quickly changing. Companies are discovering that the wage gap is narrowing and many of the disadvantages are now starting to outweigh benefits of sending jobs abroad. One of the points mentioned in the article is that wages in china have risen 10-20% in the last 10 years, whereas wages in America and Europe have remained about the same. Also, another disadvantage of send production abroad is that shipping can be very expensive. In recent years shipping costs have gotten higher such that the cost of producing elsewhere and shipping to the US is no longer as cheap as it used to be. The time factor is also a big issue. Many times transit takes as long as six weeks which makes it hard for companies to fulfill their orders in a timely manner. In conclusion, the article makes a note that a lot of companies are now rethinking their decision about going offshore. Opinion Most of the companies went offshore to save money, and I can see where they are coming from after all the whole goal of having a business is to make profits however in my opinion many of the companies did not take the time to properly analyze the other costs involved in moving jobs offshore. Many also forgot to consider how it will affect the quality of their service when it comes to shipping time and sometimes the quality of the product. I am very happy that many jobs are coming back and I think the government needs to do more to encourage the companies. They should offer tax reductions where necessary so that America will be able to compete in the global market. I also like the point the article makes, that just because companies are tending towards reducing offshoring does not mean they will be less global, infact distributing their activities more evenly around the globe will make most companies more efficient.

President Jackson and the Removal of the Cherokee Indians :: American History Essays

President Jackson and the Removal of the Cherokee Indians "The decision of the Jackson administration to remove the Cherokee Indians to lands west of the Mississippi River in the 1830's was more a reformulation of the national policy that had been in effect since the 1790's than a change in that policy." The dictum above is firm and can be easily proved by examining the administration of Jackson and comparison to the traditional course which was carried out for about 40 years. After 1825 the federal government attempted to remove all eastern Indians to the Great Plains area of the Far West. The Cherokee Indians of northwestern Georgia, to protect themselves from removal, made up a constitution which said that the Cherokee Indians were sovereign and not subject to the laws of Georgia. When the Cherokee sought help from the Congress that body only allotted lands in the West and urged them to move. The Supreme Court, however, in Worcester vs. Georgia, ruled that they constituted a "domestic dependent nation" not subject to the laws of Georgia. Jackson, who sympathized with the frontiersman, was so outraged that he refused to enforce the decision. Instead he persuaded the tribe to give up it's Georgia lands for a reservation west of the Mississippi. According to Document A, the map shows eloquently, the relationship between time and policies which effected the Indians. From the Colonial and Confederation treaties, a significant amount of land had been acquired from the Cherokee Indians. Successively, during Washington's, Monroe's, and Jefferson's administration, more and more Indian land was being commandeered. The administrations during the 1790's to the 1830's had gradually acquired more and more land from the Cherokee Indians. Jackson followed that precedent by the acquisition of more Cherokee lands. According to Document B, "the first of which is by raising an army, and [destroying the resisting] tribes entirely or 2ndly by forming treaties of peace with them", "under the existing circumstances of affairs, the United States have a clear right, consistently with the principles of justice and the laws of nature, to proceed to the destruction or expulsion of the savages." The use of the word savages, shows that the American had irreverence toward other ethnic backgrounds. Henry Knox wanted to destroy the cherokee tribes inorder to gain land for the United States, although he questions the morality of whether to acquire the cherokee land, his conclusion forbode's the appropriation. According to Document C, "That the Cherokee Nation may be led to a greater degree of civilization, and to

Popular- Process Analysis Essay

Popularity. Everyone, admitting or not, craves the positive attention from their peers and classmates. To be desired by those surrounding oneself and accepted amongst others is an inevitable side effect to the complete high school experience. No one goes to school with a want to be the out casted and sociopathic seeming student who has little to no friends; it could be said practically that teenagers lust for popularity. While some enter their school years with instant desirability, there are ways to make a popular being of oneself. The first step to becoming popular is to lose every ounce of self respect one could possibly maintain; thus creating an appearance of vulnerability which is more appealing to the widely admired crowd. This is because the lack of self respect makes one come across as a more easily persuaded being which is exactly what certain groups would look for in a person; solely because it’s easier to add an attention craving zombie to their clique, as opposed t o someone who might actually stand for what they believe in.To quicken the effect of the first step one could simply give in and choose to agree or be willing to do whatever the desired clan asks or defines as cool. The aforementioned first step on the road to popularity may have but is not limited to these side effects: losing friendships, making regrettable mistakes, backhanded compliments, and loss of self confidence. Second on the journey to social inclination is kissing good grades goodbye!Popular people don’t have time for homework or extracurricular activities, and if one ever expects to reach that level of mass acceptance then grades should be forgotten or seen as extremely low importance. This way there will be plenty of class time to make jokes, a fool of oneself, and text friends. If time is managed wisely one could probably even make fun of their previous best friends and expose their weaknesses or insecurities to the rest of those with a more commonly craved repu tation. Bad grades and hurting old friends is entirely worth the fame though, isn’t it?Lastly, to complete the transformation of popularity, trash the old reputation. Sure, it’s likely to be seen as a total wreck by most at this point, however there are probably a few people with some faith things could go back to their old and innocent ways. It’s best to eliminate that idea from their head. A few ideas on how to do that are: be provocative, publically disrespect parents, show anti-school spirit, and get caught committing some illegal act (stealing and vandalism are always some good ones). This should ensure that everyone knows just how important and deserve to be talked about one has come to be. Never stop there though; once the steps have been completed, one should continue to do crazy stupid things that will make them hallway gossip for weeks to come! In conclusion, everyone just wants to be wanted. It’s known to nearly every kid in a public school syst em, and it’s not uncommon to see ones classmates do ridiculous things for the attention of their peers. Yes, it’s impossible not to feel a need for wanting and social acceptance, it’s only human. However, it is possible to not go overboard on the need for idolization by those surrounding us. Popularity, in all honesty, is a drug more addictive than heroin, and we’re all abusing the use of it. Whether one enters their years in a school system with the support and companionship of many, or as an outcast in a social dry spell, the acceptance and acknowledgement of others can be achieved through other ways that allow not changing oneself to match another’s standard definition of popular.

Battle of Malvern Hill - Civil War Battle of Malvern Hill

Battle of Malvern Hill: Date Conflict: The Battle of Malvern Hill was part of the Seven Days Battles and was fought July 1, 1862, during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Armies Commanders Union Major General George B. McClellanBrigadier General Fitz John Porter80,000 men Confederate General Robert E. Lee80,000 men Battle of Malvern Hill - Background: Beginning on June 25, 1862, Major General George B. McClellans Army of the Potomac was the subject of repeated assaults by Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee. Falling back from the gates of Richmond, McClellan believed his army to be outnumbered and hastened to retreat to his secure supply base at Harrisons Landing where his army could shelter under the guns of the US Navy in the James River. Fighting an inconclusive action at Glendale (Fraysers Farm) on June 30, he was able to gain some breathing room for his continued withdrawal. Retreating south, the Army of the Potomac occupied a high, open plateau known as Malvern Hill on July 1. Featuring steep slopes on its southern, eastern, and western sides, the position was further protected by swampy terrain and Western Run to the east. The site had been selected the previous day by Brigadier General Fitz John Porter who commanded the Union V Corps. Riding ahead to Harrisons Landing, McClellan left Porter in command at Malvern Hill. Aware that Confederate forces would have to attack from the north, Porter formed a line facing in that direction (Map). Battle of Malvern Hill - The Union Position: Placing Brigadier General George Morells division from his corps on the far left, Porter placed the IV Corps division of Brigadier General Darius Couch to their right. The Union line was further extended to the right by the III Corps divisions of Brigadier General Philip Kearny and Joseph Hooker. These infantry formations were supported by the armys artillery under Colonel Henry Hunt. Possessing around 250 guns, he was able to emplace between 30 to 35 atop the hill at any given point. The Union line was further supported by US Navy gunboats in the river to the south and additional troops on the hill. Battle of Malvern Hill - Lees Plan: To the north of the Union position, the hill sloped down across open space that extended from 800 yards to a mile until reaching the closest tree line. To assess the Union position, Lee met with several of his commanders. While Major General Daniel H. Hill felt that an attack was ill-advised, such an action was encouraged by Major General James Longstreet. Scouting the area, Lee and Longstreet identified two suitable artillery positions that they believed would bring the hill under crossfire and suppress the Union guns. With this done, an infantry assault could move forward. Deploying opposite the Union position, Major General Thomas Stonewall Jacksons command formed the Confederate left, with Hills division in the center astride the Willis Church and Carters Mill Roads. Major General John Magruders division was to form the Confederate right, however it was misled by its guides and was late in arriving. To support this flank, Lee also assigned Major General Benjamin Hugers division to the area as well. The attack was to be led by Brigadier General Lewis A. Armisteads brigade from Hugers Division which was assigned to move forward once the guns had weakened the enemy. Battle of Malvern Hill - A Bloody Debacle: Having devised the plan for the assault, Lee, who was ill, refrained from directing operations and instead delegated the actual fighting to his subordinates. His plan quickly began to unravel when the Confederate artillery, which was strung out back to Glendale, arrived on the field in piecemeal fashion. This was further compounded by confusing orders that were issued by his headquarters. Those Confederate guns that deployed as planned were met with fierce counter-battery fire from Hunts artillery. Firing from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, Hunts men unleashed a massive bombardment that crushed the Confederate artillery. The situation for the Confederates continued to worsen when Armisteads men advanced prematurely around 3:30 PM. This keyed the larger assault as planned with Magruder sending forward two brigades as well. Pushing up the hill, they were met by a maelstrom of case and canister shot from the Union guns as well as heavy fire from the enemy infantry. To aid this advance, Hill began sending troops forward, though refrained from a general advance. As a result, his several small attacks were easily turned back by the Union forces. As the afternoon pressed on, the Confederates continued their assaults with no success. Atop the hill, Porter and Hunt had the luxury of being able to rotate units and batteries as ammunition was expended. Later in the day, the Confederates began attacks towards the western side of the hill where the terrain worked to cover part of their approach. Though they advanced farther than the previous efforts, they too were turned back by the Union guns. The greatest threat came when men from Major General Lafayette McLaws division nearly reached the Union line. Rushing reinforcements to the scene, Porter was able to turn back the attack. Battle of Malvern Hill - Aftermath: As the sun began to set, the fighting died out. During the course of the battle, the Confederates sustained 5,355 casualties while Union forces incurred 3,214. On July 2, McClellan ordered the army to continue its retreat and shifted his men to the Berkeley and Westover Plantations near Harrisons Landing. In assessing the fighting at Malvern Hill, Hill famously commented that: It was not war. It was murder. Though he followed the withdrawing Union troops, Lee was unable to inflict any additional damage. Ensconced in a strong position and backed by the US Navys guns, McClellan began a steady stream of requests for reinforcements. Ultimately deciding that the timid Union commander posed little additional threat to Richmond, Lee began dispatching men north to begin what would become the Second Manassas Campaign.
